Weathering
A factory-fresh finish is only half the story; weathering is what makes a model look like the machine it depicts. These materials add grime, dust, wear and mud over a finished paint job. Most of them go on after the base coat is hard-dry.
The weathering products, by job
Washes are solvent-based enamel solutions for grime, oil stains and wear, brushed over the finished colour. Weathering Powders add dust and dirt, applied dry, worked in wet or mixed with paints. All of them can be combined: powders mix with washes, and shades mix with each other.
Weathering a model kit, in order
Weather over a hard-dry base of Acrylic or Enamel, building the effect in stages rather than one heavy pass. Powder needs fixing in place afterwards, with Matt Modelcote varnish or DecalFix, or it stays loose to the touch. Washes dry in 10 to 20 minutes, so layers build quickly. Try the effect on a small test area first to check suitability.
