Washes
Humbrol Enamel Washes are solvent-based weathering solutions in 28ml plastic tubs, made for realistic weathered, oiled and grime effects. Brush a wash over the finished paintwork and it shades the surface the way real dirt would. Each colour dries in 10 to 20 minutes.

Enamel wash for panel lines and grime
An enamel wash darkens what it touches, the low points first: recessed detail gains depth while raised surfaces keep their colour. That is the whole trick of a panel line wash. The colours span black, white, greys, green, sand and rust, and they are made to be mixed.
Applying and blending a wash
Brush straight from the tub or a palette over paintwork that is fully hard-dry. Thin a wash with Enamel Thinners for a subtler effect, and thinning speeds up the drying too. Washes mix with each other and with Weathering Powders to build the exact effect the subject needs. Brushes clean up in the same Enamel Thinners afterwards.
Where washes sit in the job
A wash is usually the first weathering layer, straight after the base colour from the Paint range has hard-dried. Follow it with powders for dry dust, and the rest of the Weathering range builds from there.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a panel line wash?
A wash thinned and brushed so it gathers in a model's recessed panel lines, shading them darker than the surrounding surface. The effect brings out engraved detail that flat colour hides. Humbrol Enamel Washes do this straight from the tub, and thinning with Enamel Thinners gives a subtler result on fine details.
Can I mix Humbrol weathering washes?
Yes, that is how they are meant to work. Washes mix with each other to create different shades, and with Weathering Powders for thicker, textured effects. Blend on a palette rather than in the tub, so the original colours stay clean for the next job. Mixing ratios are yours to judge by eye.
How do I apply an enamel wash?
Brush it straight from the tub or a palette onto hard-dry paintwork, working it into the areas where dirt would gather. Drying takes 10 to 20 minutes, and thinning with Enamel Thinners both softens the effect and speeds the drying. Clean brushes with Enamel Thinners when the session ends.
